Description

Studio Syro is a small, independent VR animation and development company founded in 2020. They produce content using Quill and are best known for their animated series: 'Tales from Soda Island'.

History

The team met online through a shared common interest in VR art and animation; a new way of producing artwork that allows artists to immerse themselves in their paintings and draw 3D strokes in the air around them. The software of choice for Studio Syro is Quill which they use for all of their projects.

Their first project was a seven music video commissioned by Monstercat for the artist Slushii. The video is titled 'Dreaming of You/Far Away' and relied heavily on a hybrid of Quill and Unity.

Their flagship project is an original series created for Oculus TV called 'Tales from Soda Island'. The series is made entirely in VR using Quill. It comes from the mind of creator Funilab and is directed by Dan Franke. The series tells stories from the world of independent music collective 'Soda Island' whose members also compose the music for the series.

The first episode of the series: 'The Multiverse Bakery' was released in May 2020 and since then three more episodes have been released: 'The Neon Jungle', The Quantum Race', and most recently: 'The Golden Record.' Each episode also releases alongside a collection of immersive supplementary content that serves to enrich the viewing experience by teaching viewers more about Soda Island and its inhabitants. The series is available free for all Oculus users and can be found in the Quill theater section of Oculus TV.

The company also has a development branch for building interactive experiences and games.

In 2021 they developed a web-based virtual platform which was used for hosting five unique virtual exhibitions for Dawson College. The virtual event allowed students to connect with guests at a time when in-person meetings were not permitted and attendees could personalize their avatars, drink virtual beers and appreciate student artwork.
